5 Ways to Avoid Distractions When Writing

Hello, everybody! One of the biggest complaints I hear about not being able to get writing done is distractions, so that’s what we’re going to talk about today! Here are some tips to help avoid being distracted and get your work done!

#1: Music

Now, I’ll start by saying that I’m lucky enough to not be easily distracted when I’m writing, but I find listening to music really helps to put me more in my own world. It’s really nice to amp me up for what I’m writing, and blocks out other noises that might hurt focus.

#2: Do Not Disturb Mode

When I’m working on something, I tend to leave my phone on “Do Not Disturb”, which eliminates any notification sounds from your phone. Some people also like to use similar settings with special apps. There are a ton you can try out, even some that temporarily disable your internet!

#3: Make it Clear You Are Busy

But how do you stop people from interrupting you? Tell them not to, and be firm about it. Make it clear that this is your writing time, and unless it is an emergency you need to focus. Your friends and family should respect your work enough to give you a bit of peace and quiet for the day if you ask nicely.

#4: Isolate Yourself

It’s not fair on the other hand, to ask your family to be quiet if you are writing in the living room while they are playing on the PlayStation. Find your own space, where you are sort of cut off from the world for awhile. This way, you don’t need to worry about others, and you don’t inconvenience them. You can move yourself away from distractions like T.V. and others, which will help remove the temptation to stray from writing.

#5: Prepare Well

The last thing you want is to be running out of the room every two seconds to get something. Do you have your notes? Check. Glass of water or snack? Check. Earbuds? Check. Make sure you gather everything you need, that way you can write consistently, rather than having to move back and forth.

In short, there are many things you can do to help your focus, but at the end of the day, you have to choose not to be distracted.

What distracts you most? How to you eliminate it?

I post new content on Saturdays, so please follow to stay up to date! 🙂 Have an idea of what I should blog about next? Let me know in the comments, or contact me on social media @smpearceauthor !

With all of this in mind, go out and write your masterpiece!

  1. Great tips! I often try to write out and about, instead of at home. Although some find this more distracting because there’s noise, I find that if I’m at home I’m too aware of the housework and other things that need to be done. I like these tips though, especially the music one x
