Wow…So I haven’t been this blown away by a book a awhile. This is easily my favourite new read of 2019.
This book gets all five stars – let’s get into it!
“Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.
Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.
After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.
Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.
But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills — and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit — he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?”
I just need to take my hat off to Andy Weir. This book was utterly fantastic. It was full of intrigue, action, inspiration, and most of all: humour. I never lost interest for a second while reading this book. Sometimes I laughed, sometimes I was on the edge of my seat, and sometimes I just had to take a second to admire the creativity and resourcefulness of Watney.
I thought I might like THE MARTIAN, but I wasn’t even all that sure about it. I don’t read a huge amount of adult fiction, and while I adore science fiction, I surprisingly haven’t read any books that focus on today’s Mars, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Safe to say, I was not disappointed.
The book’s reflection on humanity and compassion was inspiring and uplifting, as were the tribulations and triumphs of Watney and those determined to help him. I cannot recommend this book more highly.
I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll leave it there, but if you haven’t read THE MARTIAN yet, you can find it here. You won’t regret this read!
Thanks so much for reading! I post new content on Saturdays, so be sure to follow and stay up-to-date on all things reading, writing, and OUTLIERS! 🙂
